Understanding child sexual abuse and its effects on children and young people

A course for those working with or caring for children, young people and families who have been affected by child sexual abuse

Our one-day course will enhance your understanding about child sexual abuse and its effects, and will be of interest to all practitioners required to investigate, assess, intervene, care for and support individuals or families affected by abuse.

This training course draws upon our knowledge about sex offending and trauma to give you a better understanding of the effects of child sexual abuse and the implications for investigation, assessment, intervention and care.

Course aims

With a specialist background in child sexual abuse work, our facilitators will explore:

  • Myths and facts about child sexual abuse
  • How sexual abuse happens and the dynamics of such abuse
  • How a basic knowledge of adult sex offending patterns can increase our understanding of the effects upon children and help us better understand and meet their needs
  • How sexual abuse might affect a child's behaviour and development
  • The child's perspective
  • Key issues for assessment, intervention and therapeutic care
  • The need for different agencies to adopt an integrated approach to such work
  • When specialist advice, consultation or intervention is needed
  • Issues and dilemmas about therapeutic provision

The course is suitable for those with no previous knowledge or experience in this area as well as more experienced professionals.  It will be of interest to social workers, police, therapists, education and health professionals, carers and anyone involved in the care and support of children and families affected by child sexual abuse.

Practitioners working with adult offenders or non-offending partners might also find this course will assist them in their work.
