5. Fantasy & arousal management: for practitioners working with offenders

The programme is largely interactive and uses a variety of teaching methods, including presentation, video material, case studies and group discussion.

Course overview

This one-day workshop will be of particular use to practitioners involved with the assessment, treatment and risk management of sexual offenders against children.

Course aims

The following will be covered:

  • The nature and role of sexual fantasy in an offending cycle

  • Sex as a coping device and the needs met by sexual fantasy

  • The link between sexual fantasy and emotional states

  • Models/concepts for use in direct work with offenders, including fantasy continuum, arousal diary fantasy types and themes

  • Case studies - formulating intervention and risk management plans

  • The link between deviant sexual fantasy and risk

  • Teaching arousal management techniques

By the end of the course, participants will have:

  • Greater understanding of the nature and role of fantasy in an offending cycle

  • Increased confidence in dealing with this aspect of sexual offending

  • Knowledge of arousal management techniques and how to convey them

  • Enhanced management skills
