28. Internet offenders: assessment and intervention

A course that provides information about sex offenders who use the internet to target and abuse children, including the acquisition and trading of child pornography, and how to assess and work therapeutically with them

Course overview

The course is for sex offender treatment programme practitioners and others involved in assessing and treating sex offenders, including Police, social workers, and other multi-agency public protection panel members.

It provides information about the methods employed by offenders to target, groom and abuse children using the internet, together with information about the technical terminology used in relation to computers and the internet. There is an exploration of the current debate on whether internet sex offenders are different to other kinds of sex offenders. Participants have the opportunity to practise assessment and intervention techniques.

• To provide information and skills practice on how to engage with the forms of denial encountered in internet offenders and how to work with those who deny contact sexual offending
  
  
• To provide opportunity to learn and practise assessment techniques
  
  
• To present treatment and intervention techniques and offer opportunities to practise them
