22. Understanding and managing the impact of sexual abuse upon children and young people: an awareness day for professionals


Course overview

This course has been designed for professionals from all agencies and disciplines who work with children and young people and who may encounter children who have been, or are suspected of having been sexually abused.

It aims to provide participants with a basic understanding of the impact of sexual abuse upon children and young people; to increase professionals understanding of their roles and responsibilities in multi-agency working; and to highlight the need for an integrated multi-agency approach in meeting the needs of such children.

It is of use to participants who have no previous knowledge or experience in this area but also to experienced professionals wishing to enhance their multi agency skills. The course will involve a mixture of presentation, exercises, video and discussion and each participant will receive a handout pack.

Course aims

  • To provide participants with a basic understanding of the impact of sexual abuse upon children and young people

  • To provide an overview of the key care and intervention needs of such children

  • To consider the impact of abuse and the needs of children in the context of our knowledge about adult offenders

  • To highlight the multi-agency tasks and duties in identifying, assessing and providing intervention for such children

  • To provide participants with an understanding of the need to adopt an integrated approach to such work and how all professionals can have a role in responding to children's therapeutic care / treatment needs

  • To consider the requirements of child protection in such work

  • To help participants identify when specialist advice, consultation or intervention is needed
