20. Assessing young people (10+) with sexually harmful
behaviours
Course overview
This is an introductory course designed to cater for social workers,
carers and other professionals who work or care for young people (10+)
who display sexually harmful behaviours. The course will involve a mixture
of didactic and experiential learning, including taught material, large
and small group exercises. Each participant will receive a training pack.
Course aims
- To provide participants with a basic knowledge of the main issues
raised by harmful behaviours shown by young people
- To highlight the myths and realities around issues of sexual harmful
behaviour
- To develop knowledge of the ways in which young people can develop
such behaviour
- To enable participants to distinguish between 'normal' and harmful
behaviour
- To provide an understanding of the needs that underlie such behaviour
- To increase assessment skills
- To highlight intervention, risk reduction and risk management strategies
- To have ideas for ways to support young people with their difficulties
- To consider worker feelings, values and personal issues which arise
in this work
- To consider such work in the context of a child's developmental needs,
language, gender, ethnicity, disability or experience of trauma
- To consider the requirements of child protection
