18. Awareness training: children (under 10) who display sexually inappropriate behaviours
This is course is designed for any professionals and carers who may work with or care for young children (under 10) who display sexualised or sexually abusive behaviours. It focuses on pre-adolescent children and explores their behaviour within the context of their age, development, and their experience of trauma, loss, separation and change. It is an introductory course and does not require participants to have any previous knowledge or experience in this area of work. The course aims to help carers and practitioners distinguish between 'normal' sexual development and those behaviours that elicit adult concerns and present a risk to the child or others. It will focus upon explaining why children develop such behaviour; will consider the unmet needs that underlie such behaviours; will identify key issues relevant to assessment and intervention work; and will explore issues of risk management and safe and therapeutic care The course will involve a mixture of presentation, exercises, video and discussion and each participant will receive a handout pack.
