16. Intervention work with young people (10+) who display sexually harmful behaviours


Course overview

This course is designed for any professionals responsible for undertaking post assessment work with young people and their carers where there are concerns about their sexually harmful behaviours. The course primarily focuses upon adolescent children between the ages of 10-18. It is expected that participants will have attended assessment training or be familiar with assessment of this client group.

The course aims to highlight the key intervention issues in such work, the intervention requirements of young people of both high and low need; the therapeutic care needs of young people; and the role of carers and wider social / professional network as part of the helping team. It will explore intervention techniques and strategies and the effective use of the therapeutic alliance to improve engagement to help facilitate and maintain positive change. The course will involve a mixture of presentation, exercises, video and discussion and each participant will receive a handout pack.

Course aims

  • To highlight key intervention needs of young people who display sexually harmful behaviours (whether high or low need)

  • To consider the intervention needs of young people who have dual status' as 'victim' or 'victimiser' & the impact of trauma upon young people

  • To provide frameworks for intervention

  • To identify key therapeutic care needs and the role of carers and other professionals in the work

  • To provide practical ideas for risk management and safe care

  • To consider the feelings, needs and risks to carers

  • To provide ideas on intervention techniques and use of therapeutic tools

  • To provide opportunities to learn and practice focused intervention techniques

  • To explore barriers to communication with young people and their families and explore motivational techniques)

  • To help participants plan their work and devise specific intervention plans for use by carers and other professionals
