14. Intervention work with young children (under 10) who display sexually inappropriate behaviours

Course overview

This course is designed for any professionals responsible for undertaking post assessment work with young children (under 10) and their carers where there are concerns about their sexually inappropriate or harmful behaviours. The course primarily focuses upon pre-adolescent children, but can also be of use to workers undertaking intervention with adolescents, especially those who have a learning difficulty or who operate at a younger developmental level. It is expected that participants will have attended assessment training or be familiar with assessment of this client group.

The course aims to highlight the key intervention issues in such work, the intervention requirements of children of both high and low need, and the therapeutic care needs of children and the role of carers as part of the helping team. It will explore direct work techniques and practical intervention strategies. The course will involve a mixture of presentation, exercises, video and discussion and each participant will receive a handout pack.

Course aims

  • To highlight key intervention needs of children with sexually inappropriate behaviours (whether high or low need)

  • To consider the different types of therapeutic intervention

  • To consider the intervention needs of children who have dual status' as 'victim' or 'victimiser' & the impact of trauma upon children

  • To consider intervention in the context of our knowledge about adult offenders

  • To identify key therapeutic care needs and the role of carers and other professionals in the work

  • To provide practical ideas for risk management and safe care

  • To consider the feelings, needs and risks to carers

  • To provide frameworks, tools and practical ideas for direct work with children and their carers / families

  • To provide opportunities to learn and practice focused intervention techniques

  • To explore barriers to communication with children and their families (including working with denial)

  • To help participants plan their work and devise specific intervention plans for use by carers and other professionals
