10. Applying knowledge of offenders to investigative interviewing of children and young people

The application of knowledge of offenders to understanding the child and maximising the value of the interview process within the context of 'Achieving Best Evidence'.

Course overview

This course is for police officers and social workers undertaking interviews of children and young people according to 'Achieving Best Evidence'. It demonstrates how general knowledge of the different patterns, profiles and styles of sex offenders may be used to enhance and inform the interview process with the child or young person - what to ask, why and how.

Course aims

The course will consider the following:

  • The obstacles to gaining information from the child

  • How knowledge of offenders can improve our understanding of children's presentation at interview

  • The different types and different patterns of sex offenders

  • That the concept of sexual abuse is wider than sexual assault, and includes the child being exposed to the offender's abusive thinking and values

  • How the knowledge of this process, combined with our knowledge of victim responses can inform investigative interviewing of the child in terms of process, content and attention to detail

  • A practical case study to which the above is applied
